Farewell 2019 and Happy New Year 2020

Welcome to the Dove Direct Print and Marketing Blog. Today's post, "Farewell 2019 and Happy New Year 2020," highlights some of the most impactful events of 2019. We could choose any sector, national or global, and would have hundreds, if not thousands of events that impacted our world. Therefore, we have decided to select from the circumstances or events that will likely shape 2020.

1. Climate Change

The idea of climate change has finally taken hold for the majority of nations around the world, as many countries have been affected by changing climatic conditions. At the time of this article, both California and Australia are burning at record levels. Most likely, 2020 will continue to present even more climate associated events, and at a more alarming and devastating clip. Most notably, the science community has stated that their climate models are obsolete, in that the climate is changing far more rapidly than previously estimated.

2. Social Media

Social media channels have become the arbiters of human consciousness. While social media is, for the most part, unregulated, its impact is reaching havoc on being able to identify what's the truth and what is disinformation. To that end, marketers and advertisers will continue to post their offerings as social media is a necessary evil, particularly for brands to stay visible.

There may be some businesses that decide to exit social media marketing; however, 2020 will continue with the birthing of new technologies such as the evolution of IoT (Internet of Things), and improved communication relevance across devices.

3. Women in Politics

Women's Power in Politics

2019 brought about the rising power of women in politics. Nanci Pelosi could be thought of as the themes power political on the earth, male or female, in that she resides over the purse strings of the most powerful economy in the world.  Further, as an excerpt from Fortune states: It's impossible to talk about political power players without talking about Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). The longtime California representative is on her second go-round as Speaker of the House—still, the first and only woman to hold the job—eight years after losing the gavel in the 2011 midterms. The most powerful woman in the US elected office has gone toe-to-toe with President Trump, set the tone for Democrats on impeachment, and gone viral by merely donning a Max Mara coat.

If that's not power, what is? Says Debbie Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University: "She's a constant reminder that women are tough enough and strong enough to lead at the highest levels."

Other women political leaders such as Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and Kamala Harris, among many others, have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities that have risen to prominence.  In summation, 2019 saw a record-breaking 103 women elected or re-elected into the United States House of Representatives, causing many to call it the "Year of the Woman."

4. Direct Mail Marketing

Direct mail marketing has been enjoying a resurgence of late, particularly among iconic brands such as Google, Xfinity, Mercedes, Infiniti, Direct TV, AT&T, and a host of other iconic brands.  Direct mail marketing has reached improved usage levels due, in part, the massive amounts of users on Facebook.  Facebook has billions of users in their universe. 70% of Americans spend at least 1 hour per day on Facebook, and of that 70%, 88% use their cell phones to access Facebook.

However, due to Facebook's continuous algorithm changes, Non-paid Facebook ads only reach 6% of followers. That average Facebook spend ranges from $500 to $2500 per month for small businesses.  As a result, the most efficient method used in 2019 to increase ROI, was direct mail and social media. That marketing approach proved to be one of the top investment marketing strategies in 2019 and should continue well into 2020.

5. Data Privacy

2019 brought about a plethora of data breaches across just about any industry you can imagine. Risk-Based Security provided research newly published in the 2019 MidYear QuickView Data Breach Report that the first six months of 2019 have seen more than 3,800 publicly disclosed breaches exposing an incredible 4.1 billion compromised records.  Here's a look at some of the 2019 data breaches arranged by business sector:

6. Financial Services Trends

The financial services industry in 2019 enjoyed significant digital transformational trends that are set to continue into 2020.  Digital Apps and remote banking capabilities are climbing with regularity and will continue to evolve into 2020. Ask yourself: When was the last time you set foot in an actual bank?
