In Celebration of Juneteenth 2020

Welcome to the Dove Direct Print and Marketing Blog. Today's post, "In Celebration of Juneteenth 2020," recognizes why we have a Juneteenth celebration. It's a day to reflect on our nation's history. It's also a time to learn about and support minority-owned businesses. To that end, we wish those celebrating Juneteenth, a happy and safe holiday weekend. As we enjoy the holiday weekend, let's also wish all Dad's, Happy Father's Day.

Our Quote of the Day: "If the cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail. Because the goal of America is freedom, abused and scorned tho' we may be, our destiny is tied up with America's destiny."   - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights Leader

As the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic from both a health and economic level, and the death of George Floyd and others, we find ourselves at an inflection point. As children of God, we share a commonality as human beings, and therefore we respect all.

What is Juneteenth?

For many, Juneteenth needs no explanation, while others may ask what is the significance? It's a fair question.
Juneteenth became a landmark celebration on the day word of emancipation reached enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865. In a newsletter, Senator Ed Markey states, "Juneteenth is a reminder of America's original sin of slavery. It is a day to reflect on our nation's shared, painful history."

First recognized as a holiday in 1980 in the state of Texas, Juneteenth is a state holiday in 47 of the 50 states. The exceptions are North Dakota, South Dakota, and Hawaii. However, that could change, as legislators such as Sheila Jackson Lee and Kamala Harris are working on legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday.

Support of Local Minority Establishments

To begin with, you are also bolstering the effectiveness of the ongoing national security initiative that keeps us all safer when you support local minority-owned businesses. Let's think about the ramifications of that statement for a moment.

When businesses fail in any community, minority or not, difficulties ensue over a variety of circumstances. For one, the tax base gets hit, which could cause higher taxes for others in the community, as that county or city has to make up the revenue shortfall. Secondly, it affects the community's health, as those who have lost access to healthcare due to business closings may not be able to receive treatment and, therefore, could affect others.

Speaking of the healthcare dilemma that now faces the entire globe, keep in mind that folks who have lost their job, business, or both, may have also lost access to healthcare. Many minority business owners have been hit hard by the pandemic. Due to financial hardships, many may be unable to keep their employees and could face the prospect of closing forever.

Each of us must do what we can to shore up these businesses. Did you know that African-Americans spend more dollars on retail than any other group? When that goes away, most businesses in that community will face hardship and, to that end, could become insolvent and, in some cases, not recover.

The Net-Net

There are so many reasons why we as a nation should support all of our citizens, including those on work visas from different countries. When we do, we see a country that is the envy of the world. We wish you a safe and happy remembrance of Juneteenth. Thank you for reading, "In Celebration of Juneteenth 2020."  Image Credit : Gaelle Marcel
